For a client of ours, we needed to dynamically create PDF files out of Oracle databases, including calculated charts directly from such databases. He needs those for management overview reporting until down to the most detailed transaction information. The only reasonable way to create those PDFs was for us to use the RTF2FO: RTF to XML Converter! together with Apaches FOP. The only problem was that although in essence it is possible to create the FO-s using a text editor it is way too time consuming, especially if you have to react quickly to change-requests or the client is not yet sure what he wants or needs.

So we asked him to create the reports using word to get the general look and feel and allow him to word text exactly how he wants it. We then ran it through RTF2FO: RTF to XML Converter! - et voila. The only things we needed to add were the SQL queries and SVG commands into the FO.

Basically we had a change-request implementation of less than an hour if worst came to worst.

Bizlink Systems & Development

The system we're developing is kind of a "multi-purpose-transformer-engine" written in Java (bizlink.transform.BizTransformer). What it does is it "wraps" different popular, or "own-made", transformers into "one". It also has indexing capabilities for the documents resulting from any XSLT-transformation. Very useful if you have a large amount of XML-documents and need fast access to the information.

Currently, Xalan and FOP from Apache (Allowing FO -> PDF/PS/MIF/PCL/TXT transformations), RTF2XML from IBM, RTF2FO: RTF to XML Converter! from Novosoft Inc., are implemented. It is also easy to plugin/wrap new transformers by implementing a simple interface. (Such plugin is the bizlink.xml.indexing.Indexer mentioned above).

The BizTransformer also allow "listeners" to "participate" in the transformation process. One such listener is the bizlink.apps.ImportDXL listener. It can "listen" to "whatever"-2-DXL transformations, and when the transformation is successfully done, it simply imports the DXL to any Notes-database.

The BizTransformer is configured by it's own XML, and all the transformation/import/indexing/or whatever-options are stored in the configuration file for the BizTransformer. It's really convinient to have all the information about your various transformations in one place.

Now, one of our clients, The Swedish Parliament, is using the BizTransformer to import MS-Word documents to Notes. This is done through various transformations. Some documents are first transformed to a proprietary -XML, and later to DXL -> Notes, and some goes through the "RTF2FO -> FO2DXL ->Notes"-process.
